How to make a favicon with your own hands?

A site without favicon, like a ship without a flag. Favicon is an integral part of the site brand, its image and identification. By the way, look at the issuance of any search engine (for example, Yandex). You will definitely find next to the titles of found pages and favicon documents. Those. Favicon, it is also a factor that increases the clickability of your site in search results. Therefore, without a favicon anywhere!

How to make a favicon? The process can be divided into 2 stages:

Making a favicon or finding a finished one;
Installing it on the site.
To the first task, as indicated, there may be several approaches. If for some reason you don’t want to make favicons yourself, you are too lazy, you don’t have time, or you don’t know how to try and experiment, you can find it on one of the ready-made favicon site libraries. The main disadvantage of this option is hardly your icon will be original. Most likely it is already used on dozens or even hundreds or thousands of sites. Therefore, in this case, the actual question: “Do we need such a favicon at all?”. For me, this element must be unique, even if it is simple as “3 kopecks”.

Therefore, this option was better refused and made a favicon with his own hands. Let’s dwell on this process. During the work you can use:

You can start making favicon in the desktop program or using a special service. In the first case, it is not necessary to resort to using a desktop application (for example, Photoshop), you can use the free online raster graphic editor. All you need to do is create a 16×16 pixel document and draw something on this “canvas”. Pour the background, try to draw something “pencil” or put some character or letter.

For me, using a graphic editor as a tool is the most organic option, but it’s not the only one because there are special web projects with which you can draw favicons. An example would be the site, which allows you to create an icon by pixels:

This is just one example, in fact there are so many websites – services to create favicon online – free, with different functionality and for every taste.

Another solution to the problem is web services that automatically generate a picture. For example project Logaster.

Logaster service
Since the site was originally sharpened on the development of logos, then you first have to start with it. Then a special tool will select different options favicon for your case. The editor allows you to change the appearance of image objects, texts and design. Read more about this in the article about creating a favicon in the Logaster. The note is useful for beginners, if it is difficult to figure out right away.

Whichever of the options you choose, creating a favicon is not very complicated and interesting. Installation also will not cause problems. After you save the finished icon on your computer, you can convert it into “.ico” format, or use the “.gif” or “.png” files. There will be no fundamental difference; almost any option can be animated later. The last thing to do is to upload the favicon to the “root” of the site (with the name favicon) and add the code fragment to the head section /

This process of creating and installing a favicon can be considered complete. If you need any additional information on the icons, then you can look at my article 2 years ago in another blog – all about favicon.ico icons – most of the data is still relevant there.
